GAD Council

Mission

The Gender and Development Council (GAD) is a worldwide Peace Corps working group that focuses on issues of gender equality and women's empowerment in developing nations. GAD Council, established in Ukraine in 1997, is a cross-sector program. The Council's purpose is to raise PCVs' awareness of gender-related issues within Ukraine; to develop gender and community awareness programs; and to assist PCVs and their communities in the implementation of these programs.

Objectives

1. To facilitate PCVs and counterparts in their communities to encourage implementation of grassroots efforts that promote sustainable gender equality in Ukraine.

2. To work directly with Ukrainian youth to equip them with the capacity to re-evaluate gender roles and reduce gender-based discrimination.

Membership and Meetings

Meetings are open to all Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) and staff.

Activities

Camps GLOW and TOBE
Camps GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) and TOBE (Teaching Our Boys to Excel) are five day summer camps held in Kolomiya, Ukraine, where students and Volunteers meet for sessions on leadership, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, the environment, decision making, future planning, and healthy lifestyles. Participants also visited the Shepherd's Valley and Kolomiya Youth Centers and climbed Mt. Hoverla, Ukraine's highest mountain. Get the Camp Manual

Essay Contest
In 2006, 75 adults and youth from all parts of Ukraine participated in the GAD Essay Contest. Entrants wrote about gender equality in Ukraine. There were two categories (English and Ukrainian/Russian language) and two age groups (under 17 and over 17).
